Abstract

The inscriptions discovered in the city of Leptis Magna played a prominent role in revealing much information about the noble families of the city, their titles, and the political and administrative positions held by their members, initially locally and later rising to membership in the equestrian order and the Senate. They also highlighted their contributions, whether in terms of public works they funded, such as the construction of religious buildings according to Roman religious traditions and rituals, which helped spread these practices among the local population, or economic buildings that, through their establishment, had a clear impact on the local economy and a distinctive role in economic integration with the Roman Empire, as well as infrastructure-related works that shed light on their role in urban development. Their contributions were also evident in cultural life, most notably in promoting the Latin language and funding festivals, theatrical performances, and religious celebrations. These combined aspects showed us that the wealthy families in Leptis Magna were able to understand and apply the fundamentals of Romanization

which contributed to transforming Leptis Magna into an important cultural and economic center in the Roman Empire.

Therefore, through this research paper, we will discuss the families of Leptis Magna and their role in the rapid development that occurred in the city of Leptis, one of the most important cities in the province of the three cities, to the extent that it was called the African Rome. We will also explore the Romanization of the city and the role played by the inhabitants, whether they were locals or Roman immigrants, and which group had the most significant impact.
